Soak, Stain & Carve! Workshop
Summary
- In this workshop, participants may bring their own reference photos, create an abstract painting, or work from images provided. This glass is geared toward intermediate to experienced painters looking to broaden their horizons and explore a surface they may not be used to. We will focus not only on what we are painting, but also on what we are painting on, helping participants become familiar with working on wood and discover its unique potential.
Together, we will discuss how to approach this support and highlight its expressive qualities. Using either watercolor or acrylic, we will stain the surface and build layers through thinned applications. Participants will experiment with mark-making and intentionally expose the wood grain as part of the composition.
Each participant will receive a clear-gessoed 12x16 birch panel. Paints and carving tools will be provided; however,, participants are encouraged to bring their own paints, brushes, or carving tools if preferred. The first half of the class will focus on painting and staining, while the second half will introduce carving techniques.
This class is ideal for those who want to expand their practice, explore the possibilities of working on wood panel, and incorporate elements of relief printmaking into their paintings.
OPTIONAL: Participants can bring: Personal brushes (for acrylic & watercolor), Palette knife, persona set of watercolors, acrylics, pastels, reference photo of desired subject matter, personal set of relief carving tools, personal set of graphite pencils 2H-6H
